Managing a Consistent Multichannel Strategy (And What My Garden in Okotoks Taught Me Today)

Today, I spent the whole day in my garden. And not just the usual puttering, I mean hands in the soil, sweat on my back, weeds flying kind of day. The kind of day that leaves your muscles sore and your mind surprisingly clear.
As I pulled weeds from the wet ground (they really do come out easier after a good rain), I started thinking about how similar gardening is to building and maintaining a consistent multichannel marketing strategy.
Between edging the garden beds to keep the grass at bay and strategically planting for height, colour, and growth patterns, it dawned on me, this is exactly how I approach digital marketing.
From Dirt to Digital: The Parallels Are Real
I planted dahlias today and not just because they’re beautiful, but because the deer in Okotoks tend to leave them alone (hard-earned wisdom for anyone with a garden out here). I tucked lettuce, cucumbers, and zucchini into my container boxes and even got my bean and radish seeds in.
Every single thing I planted had a reason behind it. A strategy.
And that’s exactly how successful multichannel marketing works. You can’t just scatter content everywhere and hope it grows. Like a garden, each platform and piece of content needs care, timing, and placement.
What Is a Multichannel Strategy?
A multichannel marketing strategy means showing up on the right platforms with the right message consistently.
That could mean:
A weekly blog post to boost SEO
Reels or carousels on Instagram to build community
Regular email newsletters to nurture leads
A presence on Pinterest for long-term content discovery
YouTube Shorts or podcast snippets for visibility and authority
But here’s the key: It all has to connect. Like coordinating dahlias with trailing petunias or making sure zucchini gets enough room to sprawl, your content across platforms has to align in tone, purpose, and frequency.
What My Garden Reminded Me About Strategy Today
Here are three digital marketing truths that came to life in the dirt today:
1. 🌿 Plant with Strategy, Not Impulse
I didn’t just throw seeds in the ground. I thought about the deer, the soil, the colour contrast, the height, and how each plant would grow next to the others.
Marketing Tip: Stop posting on social media without purpose. Ask: What is this content trying to do? Attract? Nurture? Convert? Your blog might be for SEO, your Instagram for visibility, your email list for conversions. Use each channel intentionally.
2. 🧤 Weed the Distractions Regularly
Today was perfect for weeding wet soil, easy pull. But if I leave it too long, they’ll choke out what I’ve planted with care.
Marketing Tip: Audit your content monthly. Is everything aligned with your brand voice and goals? Are there outdated blog posts, inactive platforms, or confusing CTAs? If so, weed them out.
3. 🌸 Layer Your Channels Like You’d Layer a Garden
I layered my flowers for height and balance. I used containers for my vegetables so they’d thrive without crowding the garden beds and make it easier for regular care and harvesting.
Marketing Tip: Repurpose content with smart layering. Your blog post? Turn it into:
A 3-part Instagram carousel
A pin for Pinterest
A Reel behind-the-scenes
A tip in your next email newsletter
Same roots, different blooms.
Why Consistency Is the Real Fertilizer
Gardens don’t grow overnight. Neither do brands.
Whether it’s planting radish seeds or launching a content calendar, growth takes time and consistent effort. And when it all starts blooming? That’s when you realize how worth it it was.
But I’ll be honest: some days, digital marketing feels overwhelming, especially when you're juggling blog posts, social media, email marketing, and everything in between. If you’ve ever felt like you're throwing seeds into the wind, hoping something sticks, you're not alone.
You Don’t Have to Grow It Alone
Here’s the truth: You can DIY your marketing, just like I can dig a garden. But sometimes it’s faster (and more fruitful) to bring in someone who knows when to plant, what to prune, and how to design for lasting growth.
If you're ready to turn your scattered content into a blooming, multichannel brand presence, reach out, I can help.
Let’s cultivate a strategy that’s as intentional and rewarding as a freshly edged garden bed on a wet May day in Okotoks.
